操車塔

　このキノコのような建物は操車塔といい、昭和14年（1939）に交差点での電車信号現示とポイントの切り替えを手動による遠隔操作をするために建てられたもので、現存する路面電車の操車塔では国内最古といわれております。この操車塔は、高さ5.4m、制御室直径1.9mあります。
　昭和44年（1969）当時には市内に６基ありましたが、施設の自動化などにより順次姿を消し、この操車塔だけが、平成７年（1995）６月まで電車信号機の制御装置が置かれ、使用されておりました。 当時交差点向側に建てられておりましたが、道路改良にともない平成７年９月、現在地に移設し、形態保存しております。

　　　Switch Tower
This mushroom-shaped structure is called the Switch Tower and was built in 1939 for changing traffic signals for streetcars at the intersection and for shifting tracks, both done by means of manual remote control. This is said to be the oldest streetcar switch tower remaining in Japan. The tower measures 5.4m high and the control room is 1.9m in diameter.
There were six towers of this type in 1969 in Hakodate. However, the automation of facilities gradually reduced the number. By June 1995, this was the only one left in use whose streetcar signal control remained. It stood on the other side of the intersection, across the street, but was moved to its present site in September 1995 because of road improvement and for preservation of its original form.
