外国人墓地（プロテスタント墓地）

地蔵寺の向かいにあるプロテスタント墓地。ペリー艦隊の水兵や日本人キリスト教徒も眠っている。

″Sleeping on a foreign shore,
Rest,sailor,rest! thy trial o’er;
Thy shipmates leave this token here,
That some,perchance,may drop a tear,
For one that braved so long the blast,
And served his country to the last″

外つ國の海邊に眠り
憩へかし舟人よ憩へかし
汝が試煉（こころみ）は果てたり

この碑文は安政元年（一八五四）ペリーが箱館
に来航したとき、不幸病死したヴァンダリヤ
号乗組のジェームズ・G ウォルフ（五十歳）と
G W・レミック（十九歳）の二水兵の霊に對
し同艦乗組員が心から敬意を拂って
献げたものである本日を卜してペリー箱
館来航百年祭を行うに當り、石に刻ん
で永く記念とする次第である

　　　外国人墓地（プロテスタント墓地）
　誰ということなくこの墓地を外国人墓地と呼んでいるが、必ずしも外国人ばかりでなく、キリスト教徒である日本人の墓も混じっている。
　しかし、当時函館で他界した外国人は、ほとんどこの墓地に埋葬されていることから、外国人墓地の名ができたと考えられている。
　古くは、安政元年（1854年）４月ペリーが艦隊を率いて来航したとき死亡した水兵ウォルフ（55才）、レミック（19才）の墓をはじめ、ドイツ代理領事ハーバー、デンマーク領事デュース、函館で倉庫業を営んでいたイギリス人スコットの墓など、40基がある。

Although this is called the Foreign Cemetery, not all of the people buried here were foreigners; it also contains some Japanese Christians.
When Commodore Perry visited Hakodate in April 1854, two crewmen, Mr Wolfe (aged 50) and Mr Remick (aged 19), were buried here. Also included among the 40 graves here are the Denmark Consul Duus, the murdered German Vice-Consul Haber, and an English warehouse manager named Scott.

　山背泊といわれたこの地区は、開港後、函館寄港中に死亡した船員や在住外国人を葬る墓地として使われ始めた。
　古くは安政元年（1854年）に没したアメリカ・ペリー艦隊の水兵や、翌年にはイギリス艦隊の水兵の墓碑が置かれたほか、当時日本との国交はなかったものの、多数の病人発生により、急きょ入港したフランス艦隊の水兵がこの地で葬られたとの記録も残されている。
　明治３年（1870年）には新たにカトリック墓地の設置について要望があり、開拓使は、改めて外国人専用の墓地として従来の英国（プロテスタント墓地）、ロシア（ロシア人墓地）に加え、フランスにカトリック墓地（現シャルトル聖パウロ修道女会墓地）を貸付け、明治９年（1876年）には、中国人墓地（現函館中華山荘）が加わり、現在の外国人墓地が形づくられた。

　　　Foreign Cemetery
This area, which used to be called Yamasedomari, was the original cemetery for sailors who died during their stay in Hakodate, and foreign residents.
Gravestones for dead sailors from Perry’s fleet and the first British fleet were installed here in 1854 and 1855 respectively. In addition, according to some records, some French sailors who died of illness were buried here after their ship entered the port despite the absence of diplomatic relations with Japan at the time.
By 1870, Britain and Russia had their own cemeteries here. Following a new demand for Catholic cemeteries, Hokkaido settlers decided to lend France a part of the area as a Catholic cemetery. It is currently a cemetery for the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Paul de Chartres. 1 In 1876 the cemetery for Chinese people, now called the Chinese graveyard, became part of the overall foreign cemetery.
